Hello from Providence, Rhode Island! Holmes and I are on our last leg
of our road trip. We left on Tuesday to visit Frederick, Maryland.
WHY would we want to travel to Frederick, MD you ask? WELL!!! The
Music & Arts Center (MAC) big warehouse headquarters are there and
they have a 3-year (paid!) apprenticeship for instrument repair
there. I went to check out the job. We stayed at my friend, Laura's
house. She graduated with a BA in music from SU last year and lives
with 4 other people and all 5 of them work at MAC.
I followed her around for a couple hours and talked to Bob Frushour,
the head honcho of instrument repairers, for about 3 minutes. This
conversation consisted of: when do you graduate? can you play sax/
clarinet/flute? Call me when in May and I'll set you up with a job.
That simple. Nothing like… so what are your credentials? What's
your major? Why should I hire you?
We left the morning, drove through Baltimore on our way to Philly. We
ran through the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 2 short hours, walked
around for a few hours, and then headed on to NYC where we stayed with
Holmes' friends place in Brooklyn. When we woke up the next morning
around 10, it had already started to snow. Within the hour it turned
into a full blown-out snow storm. ELEVEN HOURS LATER. We arrive in
Providence. A trip that should have taken about 3 hours at the
most… We were on I-95, crawling at 10 miles per hour.
Tomorrow morning we will either drive home to Maine or to Holmes'
grandmother's in Belchertown, Mass for a Christmas feast —> weather
dependent.
Quite the adventure!
Love,
Janna
