Move over, Olympics. The Gay and Lesbian International Sport Association has designated Vancouver as the host city for the 2011 North American Outgames. We are extremely excited to have awarded the games to such a fabulous city,” Greg Larocque, GLISA North American president, said in a news release issued today. ”We feel this is the ideal place to hold the 2011 games and it’s another example of how Vancouver is at the forefront of international tourism. We’re delighted to be able to keep up the post Olympic momentum. John Boychuk, president of the Vancouver Pride Society, said in the same news release that the sporting event will include more than 5,000 people from both the gay and straight communities. ”Tourism Vancouver estimates the economic impact to be well over 12 million dollars, he added. The opening ceremonies of the Outgames will be held on July 26, 2011 at UBC’s Museum of Anthropology. The focus will be on sports, human rights, and cultural celebration.
Grand Rapids-based artist Geary Jones is most recognized for his intricate small-scale weavings, but his art is very diverse. An array of sizes and mediums are linked by a continuing interest in shape, texture, and space. His large sculptures, created by weaving reclaimed materials through twisting armatures of cattle fencing, dwarf his intensely colored and highly iconic tapestries, yet both share numerous process-related and visual concerns. Suspended: The Art of Geary Jones includes both early and recent pieces and provides, through selections from a remarkably original body of work, an overview of the artist’s evolution.
