Today we went to the British Museum here in London. The story here basically is that while the sun wasn’t setting on the British Empire, they were working hard on accumulating treasures from Egypt, India, Europe, the Middle East, China, and many other places. And let me tell you, they’ve got some serious STUFF here. No replicas or recreations here…original antiquities abound. At the end of the day, there wasn’t enough time to see it all, but (footsore or not) what we saw was amazing. If you come to London, we think it’s a must see.
It’s coming up on midnight here, so I’ll just attach a few of our pictures from today (still haven’t had any time for cropping or retouching yet). Don’t forget that you can double click on any of these to see more details.
This is the original ROSETTA STONE which was the key to understanding ancient hyroglyphics. Sorry about the glass reflections, but I think they saw me coming and decided they better have this barrier up to keep me from chipping off a piece or two.
Couldn’t resist taking this. But at the very least, here’s a photo just BEGGING to be made fun of. Leave your funny captions below for this shot in the comments area.
Yes this is a REAL mummy. The details on the casket are still well preserved after all these years…but then again, wasn’t that the whole point of mummy making anyway?
This is a relic from the Middle Ages. It is actually a “Holy Relic” which supposedly houses a thorn from Christ’s crown of thorns. It is well known that there were professional relic hunters/makers that scammed many a rich seeker during those times. Sorry for the poorer quality photo, but the lighting and the case were not in the best of photographic positions. Now Carol and I certainly not ones for placing any faith in so-called religious icons. But the details of this piece are nice…and just the thought that perhaps it might be real…and the thought of maybe being so close to something that actually touched Jesus…and then considering the whole reason that it had to touch Him in the first place was pretty awe inspiring for us and helped make this day pretty special.
Tomorrow we’re off to Bath, Windsor, and yes Stonehenge. Right now it is SNOWING in London, so that might make things even more interesting. Carol is asleep right now…and that’s where I’m headed. Goodnight for now.
